This portrait is of my first love. Using different hues of pinks to create value (rather than tints and tones of one pink), I employed a monochromatic color scheme to reflect the nature of my feelings toward the subject as well as the soft masculinity I fell for. I wanted no harsh contrast or lines so the face would seem unimposing despite its size. The rip across the eyes and sprouts of green thread represent past trauma and the subsequent decay of his self-image. Also, the piece is painted over watercolor paper I soaked in oil and stretched over a frame, so the painting itself will erode over the years.
